Derrick Ray Craver

Bio

Contemporary Jazz Recording Artist

Derrick Ray Craver is a solo Contemporary Jazz bassist, producer, songwriter, and proud member of the Recording Academy. His journey from corporate America to the music industry is a testament to following passion and purpose. While building a career in the corporate world, Derrick stayed connected to music—starting as a drummer inspired by funk bands like ConFunkShun, Cameo, and Parliament-Funkadelic. As his band’s needs shifted, he transitioned to bass guitar and later became deeply involved in church music ministries, handling everything from live bass performances to media production and audio streaming.

Derrick’s bass playing is heavily influenced by legends like Mark Adams (Slave), Cedrick Martin (ConFunkShun), and Louis Johnson (Brothers Johnson). As a teen frequently on the move due to family relocations, he wasn’t able to stay with a single band long-term, so he focused on producing. Inspired by Prince’s ability to play every instrument, Derrick taught himself music production and honed his skills in his university's recording studio—often working alone during the early morning hours.

After more than 30 years in the corporate world, Derrick founded Blackroom Productions, working with local musicians and producing music across genres. His debut solo album New Chapter marks the beginning of his next life phase, combining smooth jazz with funky grooves, catchy bass lines, and chill vibes. The album features smooth jazz saxophonist Billy Ray Sheppard, whose “Southern Smooth” style adds a soulful touch to several tracks.

Originally born in Germany as a military brat, Derrick now calls Dallas, Texas home. His latest single, Reflections, is a vibrant, upbeat groove that showcases his signature style and is part of his upcoming sophomore album set for release in 2025. As both an artist and producer, Derrick continues to push creative boundaries, writing and producing music across genres.
